Overview

Around 950 emergency-medicine physicians, residents, and fellows attended the National Association of EMS Physicians’ (NAEMSP) Annual Meeting, a three-day conference that covered topics such as “Managing the Airway,” fatigue management, and tactical EMS.

CHALLENGES

NAEMSP’s Annual Meeting has grown in size so quickly that space has become an issue. “All of the seats in the sessions are filled,” said Caitlin Arnold, manager of meetings and expositions at association-management company Kellen. (Read our Pre Con profile here.) But attendees might not care. Arnold reports that EMS physicians prefer to stand at the back of most session rooms. “You’d think emergency physicians would understand fire code, but sometimes people can’t get in the back door,” Arnold said. “But it is their nature, because they’re always on the go. It presents a challenge in how to set up the general-session room, and I always have to address it during the pre-con with the hotel.”

INITIATIVES

Arnold likes to leave at least one session open to accommodate any late-breaking national events. This year, that slot was instead given over to credentialing — a hot-button topic among EMS physicians. But during the general session, attendees heard from Chris Hunter, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Orange County Health Services Department, about emergency response to the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando last June.
