CHALLENGESNAVC must ensure that the use of live animals and cadavers in hands-on sessions complies with guidelines set forth by its Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, which regulates animal research as required by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. (Read our Pre Con profile.) Happily, there were no regulatory issues at NAVC 2016. “We had a record almost-100-percent-sold-out, hands-on lab schedule this year,” said Meghan R. Golden, NAVC’s vice president of marketing and international relations.

INITIATIVES Gamification was built in to the show’s app, so users could score points by visiting booths, attending sessions, participating in nightly entertainment, and completing evaluations. “Attendees loved to compete for the prizes on the leaderboard,” Golden said, “and we were able to increase our mobile-app participation by 32 percent.” NAVC also introduced five-minute, TED-style talks this year. “The sessions were very well attended and covered a variety of topics,” Golden said. “We are looking at new ways to enhance the program for 2017.”
